Boulogne: 20 Guards Brigade's Fighting Defence (Battleground Europe Series)
by Jon Cooksey
Book Description: As German armoured columns moved to seal off French ports from retreating British troops in 1940, Winston Churchill had few reserves he could commit. In an attempt to delay the Germans at Boulogne, Churchill sent in two battalions of the Irish Guards and Welsh Guards in a hastily-organized amphibious landing. Even the best infantrymen with no armour or artillery could do little against the panzers, and the two battalions were soon withdrawn. Casualties among the Welsh Guards were particularly heavy, leading several officers to be among the founders of the Special Air Service, where they could strike back at the Germans in a less conventional manner.

In Battleground Europe style, eyewitness accounts and original photographs provide previously unknown details. A guide is also provided to the monuments, battle sites and accommodations in this historic city as they are today.

Dunkirk (Battleground Europe Series)
by Patrick Wilson
The near-miraculous escape of the defeated British Army at Dunkirk from May 29 to June 3, 1940 was one of the most remarkable incidents of World War II, and helped inspire the British people to persevere during the years of struggle still ahead. Over 300,000 British troops were evacuated, both by the Royal Navy and numerous civilian volunteers. In addition to the effort at sea, the Dunkirk operation was made possible by determined resistance by British armour and infantry at Calais and Arras, and by an RAF not yet at peak effectivesness but able to hamper Luftwaffe operations over the beleaguered port.

Dunkirk has long played a role in English history, most notably in 1588, 1658 and during the First World War. All the units, personalities, and incidents of the 1940 campaign are described in full detail, including some controversial incidents not contained in previous accounts. The 1940 campaign and the surviving landmarks of this historic town are all illustrated with numerous photographs and maps in the popular Battleground Europe style. The Publisher.

Pillar of Fire : Dunkirk 1940
by Ronald Atkin
The German advance of 1940 and the miraculous rescue of the British Expeditionary Force from the Dunkirk beaches has been described in several famous books but this dramatic first-hand account has not been readily available in the United States. Ronald Atkin's insightful account has been widely praised in Britain. In addition to unforgettable accounts of day-to-day actions, he offers perceptive observations on the inefficiency and unpreparedness of the British authorities in the face of German aggression.
